Jimi Izrael on the documentary “Meeting David Wilson”:
“I watched Meeting David Wilson on MSNBC and couldn’t decide if it was a triumphant documentary or just bourgeois intellectual masturbation.”
And that’s why Jimi Izrael is my favorite bloggers favorite blogger, because he tells it like it is. I can’t say that I fully disagree with his assessment, because I also found that the story rested too much on gratuitous afrocentrism, with props like cowrie shells, and dashiki’s prominently featured. I’m just not too big on symbolism for symbolism’s sake. What I don’t agree with, is his assessment of the movie’s opening question, “What’s wrong with black people?” Unlike Jimi, I didn’t see this question as an admittance of guilt, but instead as a provocation for the white people to be honest regarding their feelings towards black people. My only issue with the film, was that while Wilson stated his intention for making the film was to start a “real” dialogue about race between black and white people, I don’t think that Wilson did enough to find out why white people feel the way that they do about black people, and to explain to his white counterpart why black people feel the way they do about whites. That’s the only way that “real” dialogue can begin. What do you think? Speak Out!
