After years of Injury and limited playing time, Steve McNair has announced his retirement. The good thing is that his departure from the sport will not leave a vacuum for Black QB’s in the NFL. Once upon a time, black quarterback was considered to be somewhat of an oxymoron, but now there are many young black QB’s such as Vince Young and JaMarcus Russell that are taking the reins of professional franchises. They owe these opportunities to many that paved the way and proved that a black man could play the position. Men such as Randall Cunningham, Warren Moon and Doug Williams, the first black QB to play in and win a Super Bowl, have shown that African American’s do have the aptitude to play this complicated position. Now add Steve McNair to that list.
