Fresh from a night in Jail protesting the acquittal of Detectives responsible for the death of Sean Bell in New York, yesterday the Rev. Al Sharpton jumped headlong into the controversy surrounding the beating of three young men by Philadelphia Police. On his Nationally Syndicated Radio Show, Sharpton spoke about the group beating and kicking of black shooting suspects by 14 white police officers:
“I’ve not seen anything like that since Rodney King, and it’s worse than Rodney King, and we cannot allow our community to be under siege,” Sharpton said. “We’ve got to stop this nonsense in our community, acting like you got to be a certain level black to be treated within the law.”
Sharpton also interviewed Leomia Dyches, the Mother of beating victim Dwayne Dyches, and she told him that the Police have not allowed her to see her son since his arrest. Sharpton vowed to help and assured her that he has already made contact with the offices of both the Mayor and Police Commissioner regarding the situation in Philadelphia. He also intimated that his organization, the National Action Network would be helping with the legal defense, and getting her in to see her son.
The beatings, which occurred during a traffic stop on Monday, were caught on camera by a news helicopter flying over the incident. The resulting video has generated a renewed outcry against police brutality, and has put pressure on Mayor Nutter and Police Commissioner Ramsey to deal swiftly with the officers involved.
